The 49ers and the Redskins

1989 Two teams dominated the Super Bowl during the decade. Under the leadership of Joe Montana, the San Francisco 49ers won four Super Bowls, while the Washington Redskins, led by head coach Joe Gibbs, won two of their three Super Bowls.

Tennis

1989 The 1980s were a golden era of tennis, both in the men’s and women’s games. The men were dominated by rivalries between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe—the latter was number one from 1981 to 1984. Jimmy Connors was still competing at the highest level, while Ivan Llendl was number one from 1985 to 1987 and again in 1989. Boris Becker burst onto the scene when he won Wimbledon in 1985, at age seventeen, only to follow it up the next year. In the women’s game, tennis was dominated by Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Steffi Graf. Navratilova was the number one ranked player from 1982 to 1986, while Graf was number one from 1987 to 1989.
